Story Changer is a personal coaching program that helps you identify the narrative you've been living — and write the one you actually choose.
The Core Idea
When you were a child, someone may have taken the pen from your hand — replacing your story with theirs. A parent who told you what you were capable of. A teacher who decided your ceiling. A system that reduced you to a label, a case number, a diagnosis, a bill.
For decades, you may have been living into someone else's narrative. Making decisions from inside a story you never chose. Measuring yourself against standards that were never yours. Carrying a version of yourself that was written by someone who didn't fully see you — or didn't want to.
Story Changer is the process of taking that pen back. Not to pretend the past didn't happen — it did, and it shaped you. But to decide, consciously and deliberately, what your story means going forward. And to live into that story with intention.
Two Stories. One Life.
The story you were given
Written by others — parents, institutions, diagnoses
Built on their fears, their limitations, their agendas
Reinforced by years of living inside it
Feels like truth because it's all you've known
The story you choose
Written by you — from your values, your vision, your voice
Contains the past without being defined by it
Built on evidence of who you actually are
Feels like freedom because it finally fits
The Process
Most people have never stopped to ask: whose story am I actually in? The narrative you carry — about who you are, what you deserve, what is possible for you — was written by someone else. A parent. A teacher. A diagnosis. A system. A moment of failure that became a permanent identity. This phase is about excavating that story with honesty and without judgment. You cannot rewrite what you have not read.
Outcome
A clear, named account of the story that has been running your life — and where it came from.
Stories are not written all at once. They are built from moments — specific experiences that lodged themselves in your nervous system and became the lens through which you see everything else. A word spoken at the wrong time. A door closed. A person who should have protected you and didn't. This phase maps those moments — not to dwell in them, but to understand their architecture. You cannot dismantle a structure you cannot see.
Outcome
A map of the key experiences that shaped your current narrative — and the beliefs they installed.
The story you have been living feels like truth. It is not. It is an interpretation — one of many possible interpretations of the events of your life. This phase introduces the discipline of narrative challenge: examining the evidence for and against the story, identifying the distortions, and beginning to loosen the grip of beliefs that were never yours to begin with. This is not positive thinking. It is honest thinking.
Outcome
A set of challenged beliefs — examined, questioned, and no longer treated as fixed facts.
This is the moment you take the pen back. Not to pretend the past did not happen — it did, and it matters. But to decide, consciously and deliberately, what the story of your life means going forward. What do you want it to say about who you are? What do you want it to say about what is possible? The story you choose does not erase the old one. It contains it — and moves beyond it.
Outcome
A written, owned narrative of your life — one you chose, not one that was handed to you.
Writing a new story is not enough. You have to live into it — through decisions, relationships, habits, and the daily practice of acting as the person in the new narrative rather than the old one. This phase is about building the behavioral and relational scaffolding that makes the new story real. It is where the work becomes a life.
Outcome
A concrete action plan for living the new story — with accountability, structure, and support.
Who It's For
You have done everything right — or tried to. And yet something feels fundamentally off. Like you are living someone else's version of your life. Story Changer is for that feeling.
When someone takes your story from you — through abuse, neglect, or the sustained message that you are less than — the damage is narrative. Story Changer addresses it at that level.
A diagnosis can become a story. "I am a sick person." "I am a burden." "I will never be who I was." Story Changer helps you separate what happened to your body from who you are.
Divorce. Job loss. A health crisis. The death of someone who defined your world. These moments crack the old story open. Story Changer helps you decide what to build in its place.
The story the hospital wrote about me — "difficult patient," "non-compliant," "unreliable historian" — nearly killed me. I spent years learning how to put that pen down and pick up my own.
Working Together
Story Changer is delivered through one-on-one coaching sessions with Brian Van Korn. This is not a group workshop or a self-guided workbook. It is a personal engagement — because the stories that bring people here are personal.
Sessions are conducted remotely. The process moves through the five phases at a pace that honors where you are — not where a program schedule says you should be. Some people move quickly. Some need to sit with a phase for a while. Both are right.
The goal is not to feel better about the past. The goal is to live differently in the future — from a story you wrote, not one that was written for you.
Related Program
If your story was shaped specifically by a healthcare experience — a diagnosis, a hospitalization, a system that failed you — the LIGHT Method addresses that trauma directly. Many people work through both.
